What Classifies a Work as Art vs. Craft?

Many times I’ve heard people get into a debate about what classifies a work as art and what makes it a craft.

These discussions are a point of contention for me because there would always be at least one person who would have a perspective that I felt was classist because they would site the difference was based on financial gains or how it was viewed by academia.

This point of view riles me up because both of those things are inconsistent and therefore that would mean the to work would somehow change, which is ridiculous.
